As a forum and voice for local residents, YADCA aims to provide balanced advocacy on issues including:
- appropriate development,
- adequate infrastructure, and
- protection of our natural environment.
YADCA has continued to monitor development applications.
- Halcyon Yandina is under construction with 250 homes approved in the over 50’s village. Efforts were made to ensure that good active transport connections to town were included in the approval.
- The construction of a service station in Yandina’s Heritage Precinct and the fuel tanker route through the residential part of town worries residents, as does the visual impact of the signs.
- The proposal to close Creightons Road and redirect rural traffic through a residential subdivision, with 4 round-abouts and 8 raised pedestrian crossings, has caused legitimate concerns about proper process and fire and emergency evacuation. Many hours have been spent trawling through Council and Court documents to understand the process that allowed this to happen. A complaint was raised with the Ombudsman however it was dismissed because of a time limitation. I thank the Creightons Road Sub Group for their efforts to try and rectify this ill conceived decision which denied community consultation.
- Council’s Proposed Planning Scheme provides residents with an opportunity to ensure that unwanted planning decisions do not occur. YADCA is in the process of formulating a submission focused on our town and district and would also like to have input into the Structure Plan for the Emerging Community north of Yandina that was identified on the SEQ Regional Plan.
Infrastructure must support the growth that is occurring.
- YADCA supports Council’s plan to provide additional parking in Stevens Street but fears more will be needed as there are limited alternatives to using a car, particularly with such a large rural residential population.
- The Active Transport Improvement Plan – Yandina State School has guided funding this year with new paths and pedestrian crossings, however there is no commitment for a safe, compliant, active transport link across the South Maroochy River. YADCA will continue to work with our elected representatives on this.
- The Caboolture Creek bridge on Yandina Bli Bli Road is another piece of infrastructure which needs upgrading and YADCA has made repeated calls for that to happen.
- King George VI park and playground needs to expand to accommodate growth and to that end, YADCA supported the retention of the old Bowls Club land as open space to be added to the park.
- YADCA advocated for a dog park and I’m pleased to see it is currently under construction.
Before YADCA can act on an issue, it must first inform and garner input to assess support. Media coverage and an online presence is an important adjunct to our forums. I have done a number of press releases, radio and TV interviews and posts to the YADCA web site and Facebook page this year. Our Facebook following has increased to 910. Our challenge is to connect with the influx of new residents and encourage more involvement. A welcome flyer listing local groups would help the hundreds of anticipated new arrivals navigate our community, however a volunteer would be needed to research and compile such a list.
I would like to thank the Management Committee (Libbie, Keith, Ian and Ruth) for their time commitment this year. YADCA could not have run effectively without their input. Thanks to an anonymous doner, YADCA is now the owner of a laptop which will store YADCA files and be available to the Management Committee. I would also like to thank the Creightons Road Sub Group, whom I won’t name, and members who have helped in support roles (Anita, Liz, Meg, David and Ian).
Cr David Law and MP Marty Hunt’s commitment to attend YADCA forums whenever possible is much appreciated and I thank them for their time and efforts on our behalf.
